Philanthropy at Lambda Chi Alpha
We here at Lambda Chi Alpha pride ourselves on our dedication to philanthropy. Throughout the year, we participate in over thirty different philanthropies raising money for various charitable organizations. Watermelon Bust, our own philanthropy event, is a Watermelon Olympic type competition between the sororities here at Purdue. We raise money for Lafayette Food Finders, our local food pantry, and we are currently trying to break the five thousand dollar mark we set in past years. As our National Philanthropy is the North American Food Drive, we spend countless hours trying to promote to our local community that hunger is a problem that exists right here in Lafayette, and we can all do our part to stop it. One of our favorite events is our annual Halloween Canned Food Drive. We pair with a sorority each year to collect canned goods for Food Finders. In the past few years, we have raised over 10,000 pounds of food.
Although it is not mandatory, most chapters here on Purdue's campus host a local philanthropic event for the common good of our community. It is thus expected here at Lambda Chi Alpha that each member participate in these events to the best of their ability to help raise awareness in our community.
Our Philanthropies
North American Food Drive: On November 6, 1993, Lambda Chi Alpha began an international philanthropy project that has raised more than 26.9 million pounds of food for the needy across North America. Called the North American Food Drive, this annual event has arguably become the largest single-day philanthropic project sponsored by a collegiate organization. Read more...
Watermelon Bust: Watermelon Bust is one of our biggest philanthropies year round. The whole point of watermelon bust is for us to raise money for Lafayette Food Finders. Lafayette Food Finders help eliminate hunger in mid-north Indiana by re-channeling food and nonfood items that might otherwise be wasted and redirecting them to nonprofit agencies that serve low-income Hoosiers.
During Watermelon Bust different sororities compete in various competitions from seed spitting to jousting. The final event is throwing watermelons out the window and trying to hit a target on the ground.

Not only do the brothers of Lambda Chi host our own philanthropies, but we also participate in other Greek and Campus-wide events. For the past three years, we have represented one of the largest teams at Purdue University Dance Marathon benefiting Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. This year, we helped PUDM raise over $100,000 for Riley Children's Hospital. One of the biggest Greek events we help is Zeta Tau Alpha's Big Man On Campus benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness and Education. This year Lambda Chi Alpha took second place out of twenty other chapters helping ZTA raise over $100,000.
